What does nearly $500 billion in investment commitments actually mean for Canadians?

Canada’s first Investment Summit wrapped up in Toronto on September 15, bringing together investors, financial institutions, business leaders and government officials from Canada and around the world.

The headline was hard to miss. The federal government says the summit resulted in nearly $500 billion in new investment commitments to Canada. That includes commitments from Canadian pension funds, banks and other institutions, as well as international investors.

But the bigger story is why Canada is looking for this investment in the first place.

Why Canada Wanted the World to Invest? Why now?

Canada has plenty of capital of its own. Our pension funds, banks, insurers and investment institutions control enormous amounts of money. Canadian institutions announced nearly $100 billion in new capital for Canadian assets during the summit, while Canada’s major banks committed almost $325 billion in new financing for businesses and infrastructure.

The issue is that Canada also has some very large projects it wants to build.

Energy infrastructure, electricity grids, critical-mineral projects, AI and data centres, transportation infrastructure, defence manufacturing and other major industrial projects require billions of dollars and often take years to develop.

Canada is also trying to broaden its economic relationships at a time when its traditional dependence on the United States has become more complicated. The summit was therefore part of a larger effort by the federal government to attract investment and build stronger economic connections with Europe, Asia and other markets. Reuters reported that more than 160 Canadian projects were being presented to potential investors around the summit.

The government’s broader target is to catalyse $1 trillion in total investment over five years.

So the summit wasn’t simply about finding someone to finance Canada’s next project. It was about putting Canadian companies and major projects in front of some of the world’s largest pools of capital.

Who came to Canada?

The summit attracted investors from nearly 30 countries representing more than $100 trillion in assets under management, according to the federal government. Among the major international names were BlackRock and Blackstone, while Canadian participants included CPP Investments, PSP Investments and the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.

And there were some substantial announcements.

CPP Investments and Brookfield launched a $50-billion Maple Fund aimed at Canadian infrastructure and strategic industries. PSP Investments said it would increase its Canadian investments by 30 to 40%, adding approximately $25 billion. Ontario Teachers’ announced another $10 billion for Canadian opportunities, while Sun Life committed $5 billion over five years to critical infrastructure.

The summit also produced one of the country’s largest AI infrastructure announcements. Bell Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan announced a 1.2-gigawatt AI infrastructure hub with a stated capital investment of $52.5 billion and more than 4,500 expected jobs across construction, operations and related services.

There were also new commitments involving critical minerals, energy, defence, transportation and digital infrastructure.

But does foreign investment mean foreign control?

This is an understandable concern whenever Canada actively invites outside investors.

The answer depends on the deal.

Foreign investment can mean financing a Canadian project, taking a minority ownership position, partnering with Canadian investors or acquiring a controlling interest in a company. Those arrangements can have very different implications for Canadian ownership and decision-making.

The government’s proposal for Canada’s four largest airports is a useful example.

Ottawa wants to attract private capital through long-term concessions to operate the airports in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary, while retaining public ownership of the underlying land and assets. The government says any foreign investment would also be subject to Canada’s investment and national-security review processes.

That means bringing in international capital doesn’t automatically mean Canada is selling the airport or handing another country control of it.

But the concern doesn’t disappear.

Whenever outside investors become involved in important infrastructure or strategic industries, the details matter. Canadians will reasonably want to know how much ownership is changing hands, who controls the operation, how long an agreement lasts, what protections are included and where the economic benefits ultimately go.

That’s particularly important when the asset involves transportation, energy, telecommunications, critical minerals or other areas considered strategically important to Canada.

What does the $500 billion really mean?

There’s an important qualification to the headline number.

Nearly $500 billion in commitments is not the same as $500 billion already invested in Canada.

The figure includes investment commitments, financing and capital that institutions say they intend to deploy. Some projects will take years to reach construction and completion. Even the head of CPP Investments acknowledged that the real measure of the summit will be what happens after the event.

That is where the story gets more interesting.

The summit is over. Now Canada has to turn announcements into projects.

If the commitments lead to new mines, energy infrastructure, factories, data centres, technology companies and transportation projects, the impact could extend well beyond the investment itself. It could mean more jobs, greater productivity, stronger Canadian companies and infrastructure that supports the economy for decades.

But those results won’t come from a press release. They’ll come from projects actually being financed, approved and built.

Canada is opening the door—but the terms matter

There is nothing unusual about Canada seeking foreign investment. Countries compete for global capital all the time.

What is different now is the scale of Canada’s ambitions and the urgency behind them.

Canada wants to build more, attract more capital and diversify its economic relationships while maintaining Canadian ownership and decision-making where it matters most.

The Investment Summit was essentially an invitation to the world: Canada has the resources, talent, companies and opportunities. Bring your capital and build with us.

Whether that invitation pays off will depend on what happens next.

For Canadians, the most important question isn’t simply how much money was announced in Toronto. It’s whether that money helps build a more productive, competitive and resilient Canadian economy—and whether Canadians see a meaningful share of the benefits.

The 51st festival runs from September 10 to 20, 2026, and this year’s lineup includes familiar Canadian stars, homegrown stories, Indigenous artists, musicians and a new generation of Canadian filmmakers. Here are some of the Canadian actors, artists and films we’re watching.

Annie Murphy is back at TIFF

If you know Annie Murphy from Schitt’s Creek, you already know why this one is worth watching.

Murphy stars in All That She Wants, a modern romantic comedy about a casual encounter between a millennial and a Gen Zer that leads to life-changing consequences.

The film premieres September 13 at 9:30 p.m.

It’s another opportunity for one of Canada’s most recognisable television stars to take the spotlight on the international film scene.

Jay Baruchel takes on a Canadian legend

The Stunt Driver might be one of the most distinctly Canadian stories at this year’s festival.

Jay Baruchel stars as Canadian stunt driver Ken Carter in the true story of a man who became a world champion and attempted an extraordinary mile-long jump across the St. Lawrence River.

Canadian director Michael Dowse reunites with Baruchel for the film, which also stars Laurence Leboeuf, Ben Foster and Ed Helms.

The movie has its world premiere September 11 at 8:45 p.m. and had its post-production completed entirely in Ontario. Read more about the film and its upcoming theatrical release.

Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid and Hudson Williams star in YAGA

Here’s another impressive Canadian combination.

YAGA stars Canadians Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid and Hudson Williams in an adaptation of Kat Sandler’s award-winning play.

The story centres on a mysterious disappearance in a small coastal town as the truth gradually comes to light.

And yes, the Carrie-Anne Moss who played Trinity in The Matrix is Canadian.

For Schitt’s Creek fans, there’s another familiar face here too: Noah Reid.

YAGA premieres September 17 at 9 p.m. and had its post-production completed entirely in Ontario. See the FilmOntario listing.

Rush fans have a reason to celebrate

TIFF is also bringing together some of Canada’s most famous musicians for Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple.

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson team up with four celebrated drummers — Stewart Copeland, Danny Carey, Chad Smith and Gavin Harrison — to celebrate the life and legacy of Rush drummer Neil Peart.

For Canadians who grew up with Rush, this is about as Canadian a TIFF event as you can get.

Terry Fox gets the big-screen treatment

Some Canadian stars don’t need Hollywood careers to be famous.

Run Terry Run takes audiences back to one of the most extraordinary chapters in Canadian history: Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope.

Filmmaker Sean Menard uses never-before-seen footage to explore the preparation, determination and personal side of Fox’s attempt to run across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

The film premieres September 19 at Roy Thomson Hall.

For Maple Wow, this is one of the most important Canadian stories at TIFF. Terry Fox’s legacy reaches far beyond sport. His determination helped inspire generations of Canadians and millions of people around the world.

Anna Lambe is one to watch

TIFF isn’t only about the stars we already know.

In the Heart of the South stars Anna Lambe, best known to many viewers from the Canadian series North of North.

The Toronto-set story features an Inuk protagonist and supernatural elements, bringing together horror, mystery and a distinctly Canadian setting.

The film premieres September 10 at 9 p.m.

For audiences discovering Lambe for the first time, TIFF could be another step in the rise of an exciting Canadian actor.

Indigenous artists are bringing their stories to TIFF

One of the most interesting Canadian films at this year’s festival is Turtle Island Rap.

The documentary follows three young Indigenous hip-hop artists — Wiidaaseh, A$h Da Hunter and Travis Thompson — as they work towards making it from the hustle to the stage.

Directed by Alexandra Lazarowich, whose previous documentary Fast Horse was also rooted in Indigenous storytelling, the film marks her feature documentary debut.

What makes this particularly exciting is that we’re not simply watching established stars tell Indigenous stories. We’re meeting emerging Indigenous artists telling their own stories through music.

Meet the Canadians you may be talking about next

Some of the most interesting people at TIFF aren’t household names yet.

Yuula Benivolski makes her feature debut with The Black Box Is Orange, an autobiographical essay film that draws on personal memory and incomplete archives to explore her childhood in a militarised border town.

The Toronto artist and filmmaker premieres the film September 13 at 6:45 p.m.

David Bezmozgis is another Canadian filmmaker to watch. The Toronto writer adapts his own literary prize-winning work for The Betrayers, a political thriller about the limits of love and loyalty.

And Alexandra Lazarowich is introducing audiences to three young Indigenous musicians with Turtle Island Rap.

These are the Canadians who may not yet have the name recognition of Annie Murphy or Jay Baruchel — but TIFF is one of the places where that can change.

More Canadian stories on the big screen

The Canadian presence at TIFF goes well beyond the biggest names.

Sunburn follows a group of young people trying to get through a Toronto heatwave and blackout while finding unexpected connections. It premieres September 14.

Julián is a joyful animated adaptation of Jessica Love’s beloved children’s book about a young boy whose dream of becoming a mermaid changes his relationship with his grandmother. It premieres September 13.

Neverman stars Broadway and cabaret performer Justin Vivian Bond as a transgender gay-rights activist living with Alzheimer’s disease. It premieres September 14.

And Below brings a Newfoundland-set story to TIFF, with Josh Hartnett and Canadian actor Mackenzie Davis among its stars.

Ontario is having a big TIFF moment

There is a bigger story behind all these individual films.

FilmOntario has identified 15 productions with Ontario connections at this year’s festival.

That includes films featuring Canadian stars, films made by Canadian filmmakers and productions that used Ontario’s highly developed production and post-production infrastructure.

And that matters beyond the red carpet.

Behind every production are actors, writers, directors, producers, editors, camera operators, visual-effects artists, technicians and countless other people working in Canada’s screen industry.

Canada has plenty of stories worth watching

For eleven days, Toronto becomes one of the centres of the movie world.

International stars will walk the red carpet. Major studios will promote their next releases. Audiences will discover films from around the globe.

But look a little closer and there’s a pretty impressive Canadian story unfolding too.

Annie Murphy. Jay Baruchel. Carrie-Anne Moss. Noah Reid. Hudson Williams. Anna Lambe. Geddy Lee. Alex Lifeson.

Indigenous musicians and filmmakers. Emerging actors. Established directors. And stories about Canadians who have left their mark on the world.

The world may be coming to Toronto for TIFF. But Canada has plenty of stories worth putting on the big screen.

Ice cream is an easy place to experiment with a Canadian alternative.

Chapman’s Canadian Collection gives shoppers a selection from one of Canada’s best-known ice cream companies.

Chapman’s also highlights products made with 100% Canadian dairy, connecting an everyday grocery purchase with Canadian dairy farmers.

3. Colgate → Green Beaver

Toothpaste is one of those products most people buy without thinking much about where it comes from.

But Canadian companies such as Green Beaver have built trusted personal-care lines that include natural toothpastes, deodorants, and skin care designed specifically for northern climates.

The lesson isn’t that one brand is automatically better. It’s that the familiar multinational isn’t necessarily your only choice.

When it comes to big-ticket lifestyle and home items, American labels like Yeti or Casper don’t hold a monopoly on quality.

Heading out to the cottage or campsite? Schomberg, Ontario’s Chilly Moose builds heavy-duty rotomoulded coolers designed for Canadian road trips. Looking for a better night’s sleep? Skip Casper for Endy, whose temperature-regulating mattresses are engineered and manufactured directly in Canada.

10. Your Usual American Brand → Something You Haven’t Discovered Yet

This may be the most important alternative of all.

Canada has thousands of businesses producing food, clothing, household goods, personal-care products, outdoor equipment and other everyday items.

The problem isn’t necessarily a lack of Canadian products. Sometimes it’s simply that we don’t know they’re there.

Meet Your New Canadian Shopping Toolkit

The good news is that you don’t have to become an expert in corporate ownership and supply chains just to make better shopping decisions.

The CANADA List is a particularly interesting place to start. It researches companies and products and assigns a CANADA Score based on factors including ownership, manufacturing, sourcing and Canadian jobs and economic presence. For everyday shopping, Canadian Tire’s Shop Canadian collection makes it possible to browse Canadian products across categories including home, automotive, outdoor living, sports and tools.

For health, beauty, wellness, baby and household products, Well.ca’s Canadian shop brings together products from Canadian brands such as ATTITUDE, Blume, Organika, Good Protein and others.

For groceries, Voilà’s Canadian selection offers another way to find Canadian products while doing your regular grocery shop.

And if you want to discover smaller Canadian-owned businesses, Shoppa provides another marketplace for Canadian brands.

You Can Even Scan Your Shopping Cart

Want to know more while you’re standing in the store?

Apps are making that easier too. Maple Scan lets shoppers scan or photograph products and learn about their Canadian connections, ownership and potential Canadian alternatives. Its current database covers more than 32,000 products and can filter results by country or province.

Another option is Buy Canadian, which focuses on scanning grocery products to provide information about country of origin, ingredients, brands and other product details.

Don’t Just Look for a Maple Leaf

There’s an important distinction here: “Canadian” doesn’t always mean the same thing.

A company can be Canadian-owned while manufacturing products elsewhere. A product can be made in Canada while using imported materials or ingredients. And a maple leaf on packaging isn’t necessarily proof that the entire product is Canadian.

That’s why resources such as The CANADA List can be useful. They encourage shoppers to look beyond the front of the package and understand the bigger picture.

The Goal Is Choice

Canada’s relationship with the United States isn’t going to disappear. American products will continue to be part of Canadian life, and Canadians will continue to buy products from around the world.

But perhaps one positive thing to come out of this difficult trade environment is that we’re looking a little closer at what we have at home.

So next time you reach for a familiar American brand, take a moment.

Ask yourself: Is there a Canadian alternative?

Maybe there is. Maybe there isn’t.

But the next time you look, you might discover a Canadian company, a Canadian product or a Canadian business you never knew existed.

The Canada List now receives between 10,000 and 20,000 monthly visitors and currently contains roughly 8,000 products, with plans to expand significantly through partnerships with Canadian retailers including Voilà and Well.ca. The site is working with these retails to upload their entire product catalogs, which is expected to increase the list’s current 8,000 products by about tenfold.

A key feature is the link to vendor column, which is only available to companies that achieve a top-tier Canada Score of 8, 9, or 10. “I’m learning about incredible companies in B.C., the Prairies, and Atlantic Canada,” he said. “That’s been one of the best parts of this whole experience.”
